family literacy fun night

Family Literacy Fun Night was just that - FUN! The kids enjoyed an evening of stories and milk and cookies, and made colorful bookmarks to take home.  Everybody got to take home a new book from the book swap table to help keep them in the reading spirit at home.  Parents got to socialize and listen to a story or two themselves, while in the background we were all treated to some music from down on the Bayou!

We would like to thank all of our special guest readers for sharing their own love of books with the children.  We chose these readers because they play such important roles in our community, which makes the contribution of their already stretched time even more special.

Dr. Bernie Creeden - School Superintendent

Dr. Malvena Baxter - Principal of Fuller Meadow

Mrs. Michelle Fitzpatrick - Principal of Howe-Manning

Paula Lanfranchi - Middleton School Committee

Richie Harris - Middleton School Committee

Teresa Buono - MPTO President

Gail Kroll - Fuller Meadow School Council

Jodi Jarvis - Howe-Manning School Council

Kathy DiVaio –  Librarian at Howe Manning

Nancy Gallagher – Girl Scout Leader (and unofficial library assistant)

We would like to also thank all the parents who volunteered to help promote, organize, and put together this event.  Any event is only as good as the people who put it together.  Special thanks to Jodi Jarvis and Mary Hawkins for their help with planning and promoting the night, to Mrs. Daniels and Richardson’s Dairies for donating the milk, to Amy Palmer, Melyssa Bennett and Maria Scarpa for their wonderful signs, and to Shelley Hood and her ready crew of volunteers for providing us with the parent power we needed to get things going!  We couldn’t have done it without you, obviously!  We were particularly fortunate to have Linda Tirrusa, Stacy Emmett, Paula Rock, Maria Paikos-Hantzis, Maureen Libby, Christina Harris, Mary Hawkins and Jodi Jarvis there to get everything set up with such awesome timeliness, despite some unforeseen mishaps!  Thanks also to Jennifer Frassica for the coffee and cocoa!

As much fun as the night was, let us not forget that November is Massachusetts Family Literacy Month and our Read-a-Thon to support the children of Northside Elementary School.  They say it takes ten days to develop a new habit.  For those of us who aren’t yet in the habit of making time everyday to read together as a family, we still have time this month to make this our family’s habit.  Not only does reading as a family help promote the love of reading in our children, it creates lifetime memories and an enduring family connection.

Here’s to good reading!
